THE OPEN UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA (ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FACULTY OF LAW) ORDER

(Section 21(3))

G.N. No. 39 of 1996

   1. This Order may be cited as the Open University of Tanzania (Establishment of the Faculty of Law) Order.

   2. A Faculty to be known as the Faculty of Law is hereby established as a Faculty of the Open University of Tanzania.

THE INSTITUTE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION (ESTABLISHMENT) ORDER

(Section 21(3))

1.   Citation

   This Order may be cited as the Institute of Continuing Education (Establishment) Order.

2.   Interpretation

   In this Order, unless the context otherwise requires—

   "Act" means the Open University of Tanzania Act *;

   "Board" means the Board of the Institute established under Paragraph 5;

   "Committee" means the Executive Committee of the Institute established under paragraph 7;

   "Director" means the Director of the Institute of Continuing Education as appointed by the University Council in accordance with the Act;

   "Institute" means the Institute of Continuing Education established under paragraph 3; and

   "University" means the Open University of Tanzania.

3.   Establishment of a Institute

   There is hereby established an Institute to be known as the Institute of Continuing Education.

4.   Functions of the Institute

   The Institute shall be an arm of the University for the purpose of developing, promoting and undertaking the provision of adult and continuing education for adults designed to secure the development and dissemination of knowledge and skills required for the enhancement of competencies and the efficacious solution of the economic and social problems of residents of the United Republic, and in particular, it shall–

   (a)   provide facilities and services for training programmes by way of short courses, seminars, workshops, meetings and conferences for various types of instructors, extension workers, researchers, planners, managers and trainers, by both distance education and face to face methods;

   (b)   carry out extra-mural activities in identified communities, regional and study centres;

   (c)   conduct adult education and various training programmes;

   (d)   conduct extra-mural youth programmes;

   (e)   assess extra-mural performance and service needs in communities;

   (f)   assemble, pack and disseminate various types of information on applied research and technology;

   (g)   prepare and distribute vocational oriented training and demonstration materials;

   (h)   co-operate with government and other agencies in areas of research, extension and training in distance education.

5.   Board of the Institute

   (1) There shall be established a Board of the Institute consisting of–

   (a)   the Director of the Institute who shall be the Chairman;

   (b)   one representative from each Faculty of the University;

   (c)   one representative from the Library;

   (d)   five appointees of the University Council drawn among key individuals in adult/continuing education;

   (e)   one member appointed by the Senate;

   (f)   three members elected to the Board by academic staff assigned to the Institute.
